HOW IS COACHING DIFFERENT THAN Mentoring, THERAPY OR COUNSELING, or being managed on the job?

While there is some overlap between these four concepts (e.g., all involve providing guidance and support), the main difference lies in their focus and scope.

Coaching is a process where a coach provides guidance and support to an individual or group to achieve a specific goal or improve performance. The focus is on developing adaptability, skills, and knowledge.

Mentoring is a relationship where an experienced individual (mentor) shares their knowledge and advice with a less experienced person (mentee) to help them grow and develop. The focus is on personal and professional development.

Counseling/Therapy is a process where a licensed, trained counselor provides support and guidance to help individuals deal with personal or emotional issues. The focus is on mental health and well-being.

Managing is the process of directing and controlling resources (such as people, finances, and equipment) to achieve organizational goals. The focus is on achieving results and optimizing performance.

BUT, ISN'T SOLUTION-FOCUSED COACHING JUST PROJECT PLANNING?

Solution-focused coaching drills into finding practical solutions to problems rather than dwelling on the issues themselves. While project planning may involve identifying problems and developing solutions, solution-focused coaching is not limited to a specific project or task. The goal of solution-focused coaching is to help individuals and teams identify their strengths and resources to create meaningful change and achieve their goals.

I AM UNDER TREATMENT BY A LICENSED MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONAL. IS COACHING APPROPRIATE FOR ME?

Our recommendation is that you and your mental health provider work together to determine if coaching is right for you. If the decision is yes, we might arrange a group meeting to ensure a clear path forward and discuss the boundaries between coaching and healthcare provisions. Keep in mind that you may incur additional charges from your provider for such a meeting.

Therapy, counseling, and similar services require a licensed health provider. Coaching does not have such requirements. In addition, Coach Onward does not accept any form of health, or other, insurance.

If it is determined that the client would be better served by licensed mental health providers, the Coach Onward coach will pause coaching and make that recommendation to the client. It is then up to the client to seek such services at the client's own expense.

In the case of an emergency health situation, the Coach Onward coach may reach out to emergency service providers to contact the client at the client's own expense.

HOW LONG IS THE COACHING PROCESS?

The length of the coaching process is totally dependent on you, the client. Coach Onward has created a targeted set of coaching packages to enter into the coaching process more easily. But,  you might achieve your desired goals in a shorter time frame or want to extend the relationship out as you uncover additional areas of importance that you want to focus on.

In addition, everyone's lives are different and sometimes breaks are needed or additional time to process significant insights is required. These things that also contribute to overall coaching length engagements.

WHY DO I NEED TO SIGN A COACHING AGREEMENT?

Initially, the coaching agreement helps to plan the level of engagement desired and time commitment required. Most importantly, it directs both the coach and client by defining the requirements and expectations from each role. It is important to know that both the coach and client are committed for the allotted time to the process of coaching for that specific client.
